Atagoul
Sorry I've been posting so infrequently. Stuff keeps happening. Like, I'm going to be at the Stumptown Comics Fest in Portland this weekend! I'll be at the Couscous Collective table, selling them Narbonic books (including the still-reasonably-new Volume Six) and Skin Horse minicomics, so stop by if you're in the area.

Also, this past week I went to Tokyo. It was my first trip to Japan. Andrew and I are working with the Ghibli Museum on a Mary Blair museum show, and we had to courier the art across the Pacific. (Usually my userpic is some form of Mary Blair art, or else Kinnikuman, but this time it's from Hiroshi Masumura's Atagoul, my new manga obsession. Thanks, used manga store in Akihabara!) On Monday we got to visit the Ghibli Museum and then Studio Ghibli itself.

Studio Ghibli. I swear. It feels like I dreamed the whole thing, but I'm pretty sure it was real, because how else did I get this photo of us with Hayao Miyazaki?

Holy crud.

So awesome. I love how he's got an apron like a little toymaker. Which he totally is!

I concur with the above assessment.

I mean, DUDE. Seriously, DUDE.
16th-Apr-2009 03:19 am (UTC)
This was awesome when Andrew posted it. And it is still awesome. And he totally looks like he's one of his characters, here.

AND THERE IS A PORTHOLE.
16th-Apr-2009 03:50 am (UTC)
That's what I was thinking, when Andrew posted it-- Mr. Miyazaki is an amazing-looking person. I mean, it's a good photo of everyone, overall, but he looks rather different in an interesting/good way.
16th-Apr-2009 03:46 am (UTC)
DUDE.
16th-Apr-2009 03:48 am (UTC)
WOW!!
We should get drinks this weekend, btw.
17th-Apr-2009 06:07 am (UTC)

Sure, I'll be around.
16th-Apr-2009 03:52 am (UTC)
Damn it, I'm missing this again for the second year in a row due to having to work on weekends. Stupid vacation lockdown. :(

Are you just in town for the weekend? Call me if you want to meet up after 7 any day while you are here!

16th-Apr-2009 12:51 pm (UTC)
Duuuuude.

Are you going to tell us more about the visit? Huh? Huh? I'm sure it's super-top-secret and all, but what's it like?
17th-Apr-2009 06:07 am (UTC)

It's nice! I will be writing all about the trip for my Comixology column once I get back from Portland.
16th-Apr-2009 01:06 pm (UTC)
Oh. Em. Gee.

Dude, you are the Queen of the Internets for All Times.
16th-Apr-2009 03:25 pm (UTC)
Yup. You win the Internets forever and ever.

*is deeply envious even though if she met Miyazaki all she'd be able to do would be to blink star-struck at him*
16th-Apr-2009 05:00 pm (UTC)
Tokyo AND Ghibly museum AND Studio Ghibli AND the master HIMSELF!!

This can not be topped. I'm emerald green with envy ^^

17th-Apr-2009 12:00 am (UTC)
There is no swearword in any human language that can explain the magnitude of my jealousy.
17th-Apr-2009 01:04 am (UTC)
Wow! You do know how to bury big news, don't you?
:-)

Very cool, Shaenon!
17th-Apr-2009 01:18 am (UTC)
How amazingly awesomely totally cool!

And that's just for the shirts. Words do not exist to describe the coolness of meeting Miyazaki! 8-)
17th-Apr-2009 03:21 am (UTC)
I would have cried.
17th-Apr-2009 06:05 am (UTC)

I did cry a little. But I managed to hide it.
17th-Apr-2009 05:56 am (UTC)
Congratulations. I know how much that must mean to both of you.

Also, I am both jealous and awed. What an honor!

17th-Apr-2009 09:51 pm (UTC)
That's so cool!!! I hope the rest of your trip was almost as amazing, as well (I'm not sure it could possibly have matched up to that level, but a first trip to Japan must have been pretty exciting all round)
23rd-Apr-2009 01:11 am (UTC)
Damn.

D A M N.

You're hogging the geek-cred.

For your next trick, how about a photo with Satoshi Kon? Wouldn't top this, but hey, what would?
29th-Apr-2009 10:26 pm (UTC)
Serious envy....
5th-Jun-2010 03:02 pm (UTC)
OH MY FREAKING GOD

I just saw this. So jealous!! This is way better than my Satoshi Kon autograph...
