New Lil Mell!
Okay, okay, it's just a filler this week while Neil and I recover from the Stumptown Comics Fest. Enjoy a sampling of my thumbnail art.

http://www.girlamatic.com/comics/mell.php

And it wouldn't be Wednesday without a new installment in The Chronicles of William Bazillion!

Speaking of Stumptown, the brand-new Skin Horse minicomic won a Stumptown Trophy Award for Outstanding Small Press! How sweet is that?

I was at the party where the awards were announced, but everyone was rocking so hard that I didn't hear it announced. I only found out that I'd won something when I went into the convention hall the next morning and my trophy was waiting for me at the table. As you can see, I was gobsmacked.

The trophies themselves are the tackiest secondhand trophies the good people at Stumptown could find in the greater Portland area. And ours is the best one! Bask in the glory:

Here are Jeffrey's and my initials crudely scrawled into the trophy plate by Shannon Wheeler:

And the crowning glory:

BEST TROPHY EVER.

I can only hope Jeffrey is as proud as I am. Thank you, Stumptown! Oh, and if you'd like to purchase a copy of this award-winning minicomic for your own, we can make that happen.

I had a great time at Stumptown, by the way. Andrew's got a great writeup here, although he mostly talks about things he ate.

Congrats! That's awesome!

Do they take donations of trophies? Because I have a ton of cheap ones for music and debate. I'm sure my mom would be happy to have them out of the house.

All it needs is some kind of goatse-esque picture next to the bottom of that...

Hi!
It's the crazy girl who came by your table at the very end of the festival. Thank you for being so nice to me when I was just standing there stunned into incomprehensibility by your sheer awesomeness and proximity. Also, I would like to say again that I love all your comics and add that I wish I could have managed to buy a gerbil.

In my defense, just about every Stumptown write-up I've read includes a meal-by-meal breakdown, too.

It's interesting, come to think of it, since most cartoonists live off of Top Ramen and Hot Pockets, that they take travel food so seriously.

Perhaps it is *because* they live off Top Ramen and Hot Pockets that they take it so seriously.

As a freelance writer and editor of things without pictures, I live off Lean Pockets and whateverdietcolawasonsale until my husband gets some and gives me pitying looks. Then we cook something wholesome for the children.

Hell, it's Oregon. Food is pretty much why we're here. It's all anyone who lives here talks about, either.

(Well, okay, that and California drivers.)

I'd just like to point out that what you have is actually a trophy from the town of Bend, OR, presumably for their golf tournament which is clearly a superior tournament, hence the "over" as in, over and above all else. It most certainly is not a cheap pun* or sidelong reference to goatse.**

Also, that that trophy rules over any artistic little sculpture-ish thingy which you can't tell what it is except maybe some Lovecraftian version of a cube with non-Euclidean neuroses and a thing for tentacles. Or perhaps a truly deviant sex-toy.

And Shannon's scratchings are not crude. It's an homage to the makeshift nature of the Agency, and
Unity, and possibly Tip's sanity.***

* Is. It most certainly is.
** Ew. I hope not, anyway.
*** Maybe. You can't prove it isn't.

Bend, huh?

The weird part of it is that there's an outside chance that the trophy was originally made by my brother-in-law-in-law (sister-in-law's husband), who makes trophies in Eugene, Oregon. Not more than an outside chance, though, since his primary specialty is those enormous weightlifting trophies, the ones that tend to be taller than the contestants.

He's one of the few people I know who could write off a Humvee (H2) as a business expense, since the weightlifting types like to get their insanely large trophies delivered in an insanely large car.
