I Have Figured Out Funky Winkerbean.
Andrew and I have developed a theory to explain Funky Winkerbean. In brief, Funky is the Picture of Dorian Gray of the comic-strip page. It takes onto itself the sins of other comic strips so that they can remain forever youthful and beautiful, reflecting those sins in its own cast's withered and twisted countenances. The people of Westview lose limbs, waste away from terminal diseases, and age decades in a flash, all so that Dagwood and Hagar the Horrible might never age.

Was Lisa's teen pregnancy in the 1990s caused by lustful thoughts Opus harbored for Lola Granola? Did Sarge's wrath toward Beetle Baily result in Wally's near-death from a landmine, or Becky's loss of an arm? I don't think there can be any doubt that Funky himself became an alcoholic as punishment for years of moonshine indulgence in Li'l Abner and Snuffy Smith, but what massive backlog of comic-strip sin gave Lisa terminal cancer? Will Tony Montoni someday pay for Garfield's gluttony with a tragic heart attack? And what monstrous crime against four-panel decency was vast enough to wipe out not only newscaster John Darling but his entire spinoff comic, Crisis on Infinite Earths-style? Also, what's up with Crankshaft?

Questions abound, but for now I advise readers simply to keep an eye on the funny pages. Wally is missing from the new "ten years later" cast, and that means somebody--I'm looking at you, Jeffy and PJ--has done something reeeeal bad.

I wonder if the death of John Darling was the first sign of this happening? Perhaps it was done right after Batiuk's unholy pact, to show that ANYONE COULD DIE!

Hmm . . . excellent point. I recall someone on [info]binky_betsy mentioned that Funky did the same basic "Childhood sweethearts fall in love and get married" thing that FBofW did, except that it actually worked (rather than with Lizthony). They're the ones who deserved a happily ever after, not the couple who most comment 'deserve' each other.

Thank you, thank you. :) With Narbonic now rolling through archive strips, I've missed the fresh applications of the Garrity (and Farago, of course!) sense of humor. This was a priceless little gem, highlighted by remembrances of Opus lusting after Lola and of course the final dig at Jeffy and PJ. (I pcture them as slowly aging teens now, with nifty black robes and an unholy altar where they sacrifice Barfy (What? That's not the name?) to their dark Master.)

Clearly, John Darling's jolting and rather premature death is cosmic balance for a strip that's been hanging on, vampire-like, long past the date that it quite sensibly should have been dead and buried. I'll let y'all insert your own example here; you probably have one in mind anyway.

It all makes perfect sense now! Les has aged before his time because he's eating Mike Patterson's sins! Darin's biological father has crawled out from under his rock because Cathy is a glutton. Funky's stepson is a troublemaker because Curtis won't apply himself in school.

Huh. Some zillion years ago (or maybe the 1970s) I read Funky Winkerbean in a Denver paper and back then it was (assuming that I'm not remembering an Alternate Universe version) it was a fluffy high school strip. Then a few years back I saw it when it was briefly in the Boston Globe and it seemed totally different. Now from what I see online it seems to be a strip that tortures its characters. I have to wonder how such an evolution occurs.
