New Smithson!
www.smithsoncomic.com

This one goes out to the old Hypermedia and Phanopoeia gang. You know who you are.

The sandy-haired fellow is Queensbury Joe, who previously appeared in the Smithson Alphabet (and, before that, elsewhere). He's not British. He just talks that way. It's really unfortunate.

And I certainly hope no one missed this week's Chronicles of William Bazillion at www.williambazillion.com!

Finally, some sad news: no Overlooked Manga Festival this week. I am sick as a dog right now and have not had the wherewithal to put one together. But if you have suggestions for manga I could discuss in future OMFs, by all means leave them in the comments. It has to be manga that is a) available in official English translation, and b) unfairly overlooked by American audiences.

Alternately, if you want to talk about untranslated manga titles that desperately need to come over here, I'm as game for discussions of Nijigahara Holograph or Detroit Metal City as the next nerd.

Second that.
How about Oda Hideji's A Patch of Dreams?
And is it too early to do Gintama?
It is also a constant source of shame that there are people out there not reading Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

I clicked on the comment link specifically to ask for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. It's true, I don't think enough people are reading the English version, and it seems like it was made for us.

I could also go for Flowers and Bees, which still gets me every time with "You'll have to excuse me." That one may have been fairly popular while it was coming out, though.

The Tatsumi collections from Drawn and Quarterly would also be good (I imagine those or overlooked, or the third volume wouldn't be so delayed), or maybe a focus on one-shot volumes, short stories or otherwise... I'm thinking specifically of the three one-shot volumes which were featured in Animerica Extra in its last days, two of which I liked, though Short Program 2 maybe doesn't count. Red Snake, the first volume in the Hino Horror series, would fit nicely in there since it's still in print and the best horror manga ever.

I'm being too big a geek I think, so I'll stop to save myself the embarassment.

How about Gon ? Does it have a public in the U.S. ?

My job involved drawing the borders around every frame of the comic because it the Japanese version = borderless.

It was incredibly stimulating.

I second Detroit Metal City and would also declare that, while it's never going to happen, I would love if Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou were officially translated.

Especially since I can't review my favourites so well as I gush too much.

I would love for you to break a lance for Kyoko Hikawa's Kanata Kara/ From Far Away (all 14 volumes out by Viz), as I desperately hope someone will license Miriam or Chizumi & Fujiomi (it could happen: if they can license From Eroica with Love, why not).

If you haven't bought a copy maybe my gushing could tempt you?

Hope you feel better! For OMF, I'd suggest the works of Erica Sakurazawa. I'm a huge josei freak, and her stories are so realistic, but not too heavy.

Hmmm.... shifting through my BigScaryMangaList....
Alien Nine- wierd, kind of traumatic scifi blended with a kids manga. Though it's not entirely overlooked as the anime was a hit of sorts, it's still not something you see people talking about.

Suki- A Like Story- aka the CLAMP manga no one talks about, so much so, it went Out Of Print. Pretty cute with some metafiction elements, and a focus on the concept of platonic romance.

Gundam Ecole du Ciel- Haruhiko Mikimoto....Gundam...vaguely Cirque du Soleil sounding name and Canadian setting... and yet no one talks about it. I like it, but I might be in the minority.

Manwha-
Laya Witch of the Red Pooh- short 2 volume manwha about a young witch, her chain smoking talking cat Puss, and the various people who bum off her, and live in her house, in her Harry Potter-esque world. Cute, and kind of oddball, in a domestic indy comics kind of way, with short 4 page stories.

Witch Class--- About a young girl who becomes a Witch's Apprentice, and is innocently quite evil about it. So overlooked, it got put on hiatus after vol.2..... a really fun read, with constant references to Candy Candy, a rather sinister yet sweet heroine, and generally solid art.... kind of like a lighter version of Sugar Sugar Rune.

Though you tend to come across the better, crazy manga then I do....

The (US published) Alien Nine books are still available from the CPM Press website, by the way. You can read free sample pages at http://www.centralparkmedia.com/alien9/extrasb.html

Thanks! I'm only missing vol.3 [though I do have the sequel one shot "Emulators" that ended things]. CPM did a fairly nice job on the series overall.... I have to get around to getting the anime while CPM still has the rights to it [it seems a lot of their older titles are going OOP lately]

[BigScaryMangaList=my text file of what's on my bookshelves]

No problems shilling! Do you work for CPM ? I'm looking forward to some of their newer manga titles [though I do hope they get back into the anime game sometime..... the promotion HMV's having at the moment gives me a little hope]

How about Caravan Kidd by Johji Manabea? It's a late 80s shounen sci-fi, obscure, and it's out in English. How you can you not love a manga with a holiday side story featuring a blitzed Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer trying to recruit Santa's estranged party-girl daughter to save Christmas after her old man goes senile? Also, gratuitous nudity, romance, and sword fights.

Overlooked Manga request

There's one overlooked manga series that Viz began translating back in the $15 book days that never made it past volume two.
Eat-Man. I really enjoy this series about the explorer Bolt Crank. His special ability and his cool attitude make him a really interesting character.
I really wish Viz would pick it back up and release it in its entirety. I've gotten some of the scans, but to hold the books is so much more appealing.
