New Smithson!
Still with the lovely autumn colors...

I've been listening to the Procol Harum song "Man with a Mission" over and over lately. It's such a great superhero song. All superheroes should listen to it on their headphones while patrolling their cities, or whatever it is they patrol.

It is, of course, just part of the massive Smithson playlist on my iPod. I've got one for Smithson and one for Narbonic. I'm a giant dork.

And, see, you say "man with a mission" and my mind goes straight to Elvis Costello's "Every Day I Write The Book." Which mightn't be entirely in-apt either.

Gemma's officially on notice now. Normally I'm fond of the Angry Girl With A Secret, but something about that woman just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe she'll redeem herself; but in and of itself, that's a loaded question. What, exactly, does she need to be "redeemed" from? She's obviously hurt and starving for attention, but sometimes I wonder if she doesn't take a masochistic glee in her own alienation. It makes it hard to have any sympathy for her.

You may be a giant nerd, but the playlists your nerdity generates are both exquisite and rad. So no harm there. Gonna have to have me a listen to the track you mentioned; thankfully, my local library believes that Procol Harum did something other than "Whiter Shade of Pale", something that pop culture at large remains unconvinced of. It looked dubious there, for a while, but that was only because I thought "Procol Harum" was some guy's name, not the name of the band. It's the Jethro Tull fallacy all over again...

Gemma's a jerk. Sadly, though, I think she actually meant this as an honest question.

She is a something of a weirdo, but I guess you can forgive her a little bizarre back-and-forth antipathy when you hate someone and are yet totally hot for them. Plus, she gets bonus points for unicycle skills. But she still has a long way to go.

By the by, got a hold of a copy of "Man With a Mission". You're totally right, that's a superhero song right there. If "Smithson" were an animated film you could totally include it on the soundtrack and have a cute little music video as a DVD extra to boot.

Narbonic Soundtrack?

I would be interested in the highlights of your Narbonic soundtrack. My playlist doesn't have nearly enough Mad Science on it.

It's an embarrassingly long playlist. Some of the mad-sciency tracks:

Barenaked Ladies, "Some Fantastic." The Narbonic theme song.

Elvis Costello, "B Movie." Lot of Elvis Costello on the Narbonic mix for some reason. I've also got "Doctor Luther's Assistant" and "Waiting for the End of the World."

Jonathan Coulton, "Skullcrusher Mountain." Yes, everyone can stop emailing me: I've heard Jonathan Coulton. I've also got "De-Evolving," "Code Monkey," and "The Future Soon."

The Divine Comedy, "Mastermind." Mostly for the chorus.

The Dresden Dolls, "Coin-Operated Boy."

The Electric Light Orchestra, "Yours Truly, 2095."

Freezepop, "Science Genius Girl."

The Incredible Moses Leroy, "Transmission C."

Aimee Mann, "Frankenstein."

Oingo Boingo, "No Spill Blood."

Seanan McGuire, "Maybe It's Crazy." Seanan has also composed a Narbonic filk, but it hasn't been recorded, so I have to content myself with this mad-scientist/henchman love song.

Do Peterson, "An Example Show." Peterson presented his biostatistics dissertation at the University of Washington as a concept album. This is one of the tracks.

Shonen Knife, "Wonder Wine."

Soul Coughing, "So Far I Have Not Found the Science."

"There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow." The song from the old Carousel of Progress attraction at Disneyland. There's something about that optimistic Cold War faith in infinite progress and the redeeming power of technology that seems very mad-science to me, but I'm a cynical Gen Xer.

And of course I have about six different covers of "She Blinded Me with Science," including one by an MIT a capella group and one by the Stanford Marching Band. People just keep giving them to me.

I am surprised and disappointed that no songs I know are on this list.

I was wondering about your taste in music until I saw this post. Unfortunately, there's so much overlap that it probably isn't worth sending my own mix along... And yes, Elvis Costello IS perfect for mad science.
