New Smithson!
By the one and only Roger Langridge:

I'm thinking of doing a new set of illustrations for the cast page. The current set is the "Nerd Rock Mix," with each character representing a song by a nerdy rock group (and, amazingly, only one is They Might Be Giants). For the next set, I was thinking of doing what I call the "Validation Mix," with the characters representing great moments in mainstream acceptance of the comics medium. These could include:

-- Harvey Pekar yelling at David Letterman
-- That a-Ha video for "Take on Me"
-- Rob Liefeld's Levi's jeans commercial

Can you think of any more good ones? Also, can you believe that I can't find visual reference for the Rob Liefeld jeans ad on the Internet? That's what the internet is supposed to be FOR, dammit.

Possible future cast page themes: J-pop ephemera, Broadway musicals, the cast as characters from the movie "Barbarella," and, of course, comic-book covers (although I only have a couple of ideas for that one).

Seems to be back up now. According to Joey, WebComicsNation got hacked last night.

Link from the Narbonic site works as of 10:32 CST this morning.

"Mainstream acceptance"? eh, the wedding at the stadium?

Related note - campus bookstore t-shirts? If not cafepress, Off-World Designs?

Should be working now.

The first bit of merchandise Brian and I want to do is a "Guide to Smithson" minicomic. Unfortunately, this requires me to WRITE it first.

Michael Chabon working on Spider-Man 2. Actually, Kavalier & Clay might be worth a mention, too.

I really want a Smithson hoodie. And maybe a cafeteria-worker hat with a hairnet.

I'm with prodigal on this. I feel bereft, and I'm not even sure why. Not to mention the sudden floor-drops-away feeling from realizing that I need to rethink some longstanding assumptions about the plot.

Rock on, Shaenon! You are so mean!

I think the Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles hitting mainstream was somewhat significant, both in attention is brought of kids to comics, but also it revolutionized independent publishing.
The Batman first movie was too, I think it kinda' started the modern desire for movies of comics.
Wasn't "Mallrats" or something about a cartoonist? or was it "something about Mary"? one of those I haven't seen.
Persepolis, and I guess as well, MAUS, have done a lot I htink, because they deal with topics that people find "serious enough" to read a comic.
"crumb" did quite well, and certainly seemd to bring his work to a broader attention.
Chris Ware, isn't he currently doing comics for the New York Times who have pretty much NEVER done comics? That could be viewed as significant maybe, though I'm not sure how much it has brought people to read comics.

Hm. That's all i can think of as possiblities at the moment.

I think Jaime Hernandez was doing that too.
