I Have a House!

Yeah, so it looks like a couple of weeks ago we bought a house. It's a 1928 Craftsman bungalow, a bit of a fixer-upper, with lovely hardwood floors. For the next two months, Andrew and I will be doing pretty much nothing but renovation. "Before" photos behind the cut.

Congratulations! It really is a little fun learning all of the repair jobs that will crop up from now on. Also, you will never go to Lowe's/Home Depot again without thinking, "Why, yes, I need a new _____ for my modular, rechargeable tool system."

On the double-plus side, those hardwood floors look gorgeous.

As we say here in New York: Mazel tov!

Can't wait to see/hear True Tales of Renovation.

Oooh, built ins! There is a lot of nice stuff in the house and you get to break everything else! Win-win!

I see an apparently working fireplace in that second photo. Fireplace cool.

Bathroom scary. Thus, the bare-handed attack, of course.

Congratulations to you and Andrew, Shaenon! The place looks quite nice, and I hope you have fun doing the renovations and making it yours.

Congratulations! That's so exciting! *^^*

Congratulations and I hope you enjoy your process! (agree with the above advice to involve experienced handyman in the process, just saying)

Do you know of the existence of Urban Ore and Omega Salvage in Berkeley? These places make me wanna be a homeowner again and rip stuff out... so I get exactly what I want...

*sigh*

Yes, I checked out both Urban Ore and Ohmega last weekend. Oh, the lovely Craftsman fixtures I would install in every surface if I weren't, you know, poor.

oh, and I finally framed the Narbonic strips I bought from you an age ago, and gave the framed version to my husband for christmas/yule/winterholiday. Two christmas presents in one! woo hoo! He liked them very much (again!)

good luck with the house. It's a wonderful adventure, if you don't kill each other over paint chip colors and the like.

Congrats, you guys! Looks like a nice place. The wood floors especially. (I think several of my friends growing up had that same kitchen linoleum.)

Congrats, you guys! That looks amazing!

And hooray for more Berkeley cartoonists. Do send out a housewarming notice when it's ready, I'll definitely hop over there for some cartoonist nights!

Where in Berkeley are you? Email me!

Wow! Congrats on the getting the house! I can't wait to see what you do to the place. =D

Awesome! Congrats. And I'm sure you have lots of others who can offer info, but I lived and worked in the Berkeley/Oakland/Emeryville area for six years before temporary insanity took me back to grad school, so I know a number of good restaurants if you want recommendations.

AWESOME! Congrats on getting the house! Believe me, remodeling may be a lot of work, but it so very, very satisfying. Good luck!

Congrats on the Craftsman! I am filled with envy, since I love those houses, but also filled with sympathy, because the renovation is going to be long and hellish. (Renovations always are... but so satisfying when you're done!) Our place is a 1950's house and that's old enough to be needing serious work...

That kitchen color scheme is kind of frightening, seriously.

If you're frightened by that countertop/floor combination, I probably shouldn't mention that the walls were originally DAY-GLO ORANGE.

Congratulations!
It looks like a lovely house with a lot of potential. Good luck with your renovations! :)

Congrats!
It's always and adventure with a home of this vintage - mine's from '29. Cheers to finding some, uhmm, interesting things as you remodel ;P
